Orthodontic treatment lasts approximately 2 years. Right after teeth are straightened, the structure around teeth (periodontium) are not adapted to new teeth positioning yet. Besides, bone structure is not mature. Therefore, if appliances are removed, teeth can start moving back to their initial positions. In order to prevent this, teeth need to be reinforced in their new position by other means. This last phase of the treatment is called reinforcement treatment. Children also need to take care of their teeth at this stage.
